Hofburg Innsbruck

The Hofburg in the centre of Innsbruck was the seat of the Tirolean country princes. It was archduke Sigmund der Münzreiche (the one with the many coins) who gave the order to built a castle. His follower Emperor Maximilian I. extended the facility. Empress Maria Theresia gave the order to rebuilt the castle into todays form.  This was between 1740 - 1780. A quite expensive project, if you keep in mind that Maria Theresia visited Innsbruck only two times in her life. 1739 on her way through and 1765 for the wedding of her son Leopold II with the princess Maria Ludovica from Spain.

The Hofburg is located directly next to the cathdral and close to the golden roof and the old town.
