mürzzuschlagInhabitants: 9.500

Mürzzuschlag is located in the North Eastern part of the federal state Styria, directly next to the river Mürz and the border to Lower Austria. The town was mentioned the first time in a document in 1227. Minnesinger "Ulrich von Liechtenstein", who lived from 1200 to 1275,  mentioned the town in one of his poems about his trip from Venice to Bohemia.

The name of the town has Slavonian origin. "Muriza Slaka her" was the expression of a Slavic meadow.

In 1360 Mürzzuschlag received the privilege to be the only place between Leoben and Semmering to produce small irons.
