Knittelfeld

knittelfeldInhabitants: 13.000

The document which mentioned Knittelfeld the first time dates back to the 1st August 1224. The document tells about a church in "Chnvtelveld".

Knittelfeld was always forced to compete with the other cities in its neighbourhood like Judenburg and Leoben. Judenburg was prefered by Italian merchants, and Leoben was favoured by the iron trade. For a long time Knittelfeld was not able to step out of the shadows of those two cities.

It took a long time when Knittelfeld took an increase of its importance. It was in the second half of the 19th century when Knittelfeld became a part of the important railway connection from Vienna to the Murtal valley. The industry expanded and Knittelfeld had a high inrush of people who were searching for work. The people came partly from far away: from todays Czech Republic, but also Slovenia, or closer from the neigbour federal state of Carinthia. That was the period when Knittelfeld received its size of today.

During the second world war the town was completely destroyed by Allied bombers.

The railway still plays an important role in todays income of the town as well as one of the main employer of Knittelfeld.
