kaprun salzburgInhabitants: 3.000

Kaprun is a small alpine town in the Pinzgau district of Salzburg County. Situated at the foot of the Kitzsteinhorn Glacier. Kaprun is one of the most important wintersports centre in Austria.

The town is also known for its power plant, construction of which began during World War II and was finished after the war was over.

In 2000, it was the site of the Kaprun disaster, in which 155 skiers lost their lives in a tunnel fire.

The first mention of Kaprun in a document took place in the year 931 with the Celtic name "Chataprunnin" which means "wild water". The place was a little village of mountain farmers over centuries. Celtic traces of mining activities were found in the area of the Bürgkogel (close to the Talstation of the Maiskogelseilbahn).

Since the finalization of the power plant in the year 1955, Kaprun experiences a continuous upswing. By the building of the cabel railway from 1963 to 1963 in three stages to the Mount Kitzsteinhorn, Kaprun was the first place in Austria which had a cabel railway connection to a glacier area.
