Bad Gastein

bad gasteinInhabitants: 6.000

Bad Gastein is a popular holiday destination for spa and winter sport tourists in the Southern part of the Salzburg province, at the end of the Gasteinertal valley.

Until 1996 Bad Gastein was written "Badgastein".

Already during the time of the Middle Ages, Bad Gastein was known for its healing water. Many kings and dukes came to the town to improve their health. During the 19th century more and more tourists came. In 1905 the railway connection was opened. Bad Gastein drowned in money. Important politicans were regular guests. Among them the German Emperor "Kaiser Wilhelm", Tsar of Russia, Bismarck, Chrustschow, Leopold of Belgium, Toscanini, Franz Schubert, Thomas Mann and Grillparzer. In 1865 the "Gasteiner Konvention" between Prussia and Austria for the administrative authority of Schlewsig Holstein was signed in Bad Gastein.

But today the glorious past of Bad Gastein is over. The change took place after the second world war. The rich and famous guests stayed away from Bad Gastein. They found other holiday destinations. The new guests of Bad Gastein were panel patients. Time after time the huge hotel fortresses decayed and were not renovated anymore. Those buildings still can be seen in the centre of Bad Gastein. They belong to speculators who are waiting for a good price to sell, but nobody is interested to buy them. If new hotels are built, they are erected somewhere out of the centre.

After the second world war Bad Gastein also tried to establish itself as winter holiday destination. Nowadays most of the tourists come in winter time.
