Weitra

lower austriaInhabitants: 3.000

The town in the Waldviertel of the federal province Lower Austria was founded in the year 1201 by Hadmar II. In 1296 the city became in possession of the Family Habsburg. After the first world war, Weitra became a border town, because the Czech Republic declared it's independency. This made itself especially felt with the "iron curton" after the world war II. Weitra was now on the border between east and west. This had a negative effect on Weitra's economical situation.Weitra is Austria's oldest beer brewing town.  You can also visit a beer museum in the castle. Besides Weitra has three different beer brands which you can try in it's restaurants.
