Between the motorway A1 and the danube river in the middle of Lower Austria you can find the town called Melk with it's monastery over the roofs of the town.

Melk is the western gate of the Wachau region.

Melk was first mentioned in a document in the year 831 as "Medilica".  In the year 976 the town was the residence of Leopold the first.  Adalbert der Siegreiche (Adalbert the victorious one) which was margrave of Austria, also had his residence here. So Melk was a very important place in the past. Adalbert also died in Melk on the 26th May 1055. He was one of the Babenberger family.
