Pöchlarn is the birthplace of the famous Austrian expressionist painter Oskar Kokoschka (1886-1980).

Alrerady 4.000 years BC the region around Pöchlarn populated. The people in that time were managing the trade with serpentine. Todays municipal area was a little island between the two rivers Danube and Erlauf. On this place there was an important danube passage. In the time of the Romean Empire, the place was part of the "Limes", the fortified border between the Romean Empire and the German tribes. During the ruling perdiod of Tiberius a little fortress was built on the island of todays municipal area.

Pöchlarn was first mentioned as "Bechelaren" and was also mentioned in the Nibelungenlied as "Stammburg des Rüdiger von Bechelaren".

The birthplace of Oskar Kokoschka. He was born on the 1st March 1886. Today there is a Kokoschka museum inside.


The Tower "Welserturm" was part of the northwestern corner of the mediaeval city fortress. The tower was built to protect the city from the Hungarians.
