spittal an der drauInhabitants: 16.500

Spittal an der Drau is a city in Carinthia, close to the Lake Millstätter See. The river called "Lieser" flows from north to south through the town and leads into the Drau river (Drava).  The local moutains of Spittal an der Drau is the Mount Goldeck, which is located in the south of the town.

The name of Spittal comes from a hospital, which was built from Duke Otto II von Ortenburg and his brother, Archidiakon Hermann, on the left shore of the Lieser river in the year 1191.

The castle "Schloss Porcia" was built in the year 1533.  During the Carinthian "Abwehrkampf" in 1919, when Yugoslavian troops tried to occupy Carinthia, Spittal an der Drau was the short-time capital of Carinthia and the place of residence for the Carinthian government.
