Klagenfurt

carinthiaInhabitants: 100.000

Klagenfurt is the capital of Austria's southern province Carinthia. At the beginning was the Lindwurm dragon. He lived in the swamp. When brave men were able to kill this dragon, Klagenfurt was ready to be build. This is the story.Klagenfurt was first mentioned in a document between 1193 and 1199 as "Forum Chlagenvurth". Klagenfurt was a little village in this time and located right next to the river Glan. Living in Klagenfurt in those times was a "wet matter", as the place was flooded several times and had to be created new.The year 1246 was the right time for the right man: Bernhard von Spanheim. He moved from the old place of the river side to the place where nowadays the "Alte Markt" is located and founded Klagenfurt new, and the city was now ready to grow and succeed. The 16th und 17th centuries were the best periods of Klagenfurt.  A massive fortress was built around the city. In 1809 Napoleon came with his soldiers and destroyed the mighty walls, because he could not bear any fortress in the back on his march to the east. The Old City with its central "Alter Platz" (Old Square) is worth seeing. Notable landmarks include the Lake Wörthersee, the warmest European Alpine lake, the Lindwurm Brunnen, a dragon fountain, and nearby Hochosterwitz Castle, an impressively fortified castle on a high hill that can only be reached by an ascending spiral path which is fortified with a series of gates.
