Friesach is a town in the Northern part of Carinthia with a distinguished history.

Friesach counts to the oldest town in Carinthia. Well-preserved buildings from the middle ages bear witness of an impressive history of Friesach.

The municipality of Friesach consists of following districts and villages: Friesach, St. Salvator, Zeltschach, Dobritsch, Dörfl, Engelsdorf, Gaisberg, Grafendorf, Guldendorf, Gundersdorf, Gunzenberg, Gwerz, Harold, Hartmannsdorf, Hundsdorf, Ingolsthal, Judendorf, Kräuping, Leimersberg, Mayerhofen, Moserwinkl, Oberdorf I, Oberdorf II, Olsa, Pabenberg, Reisenberg, Ross¸bach, Sankt Johann, Sankt Salvator, Sankt Stefan, Sattelbogen, Schratzbach, Schwall, Silbermann, Staudachhof, Stegsdorf, Timrian, Wagendorf, Wiegen, Wiesen, Zeltschach, Zeltschachberg, Zienitzen, and Zmuck.

It was in 860 when Friesach was mentioned the first time in a document. "Ludwig the German" donated Hof-Friesah to the archbishop of Salzburg Adelwin.

Friesach was located on the attractive trade route between Vienna and Venice, and grew quickly to an important centre of trade during the middle ages. In 1215 Friesach became town, and had its best times from 1200 to 1246 under the reign of archbishop Eberhard II. Friesach was the second biggest town of the arch monastery Salzburg, and the most important town in Carinthia.

The "coin of Friesach" (der Friesacher Pfenning) was minted the first time in 1130. This kind of coin was the important currency in that period till East Hungary.

Friesach was not only a centre of trade. Also the church found and made an important place of religion of Friesach. It was a residence for the archbishops of Salzburg. At the end of the 13th century, Friesach was the scene of many bloody wars between the archbishops o f Salzburg, the Habsburg dynasty and the Czechs from Bohemia. The town was conquered, looted and destroyed three times in a short perdiod. Result: Friesach was never able again to reach its glory and importance which the town once had before.
